In The Line Of Duty
This page is in honor of those fallen Officer's of the Johnstown Police Department while in the Line of Duty.
Lt. Stearn died on May 13, 1916 as a result of stroke suffered while chasing several boys in the Old Conemaugh Boro section 5 weeks earlier. Lt. Stearn discovered several boys at the Adams St. School and began to chase them. Lt. Stearn jumped a wall and suffered a stroke which left him unconscious until he died. lt. Stearn was a 8 year veteran, died at the age of 70 and was survived by his wife and 7 children. Ptlm. Otto A. Nukem died on September 12, 1923 as a result of a gun shot wound suffered on Friday August 31, 1923 in the Rosedale section of the City. Pltm. Otto was responding to a Riot in Rosedale along with Capt. Otto Fink, County Detective Joseph L. Abrahams and County Detective John A. James. Gun fire erupted and the four listed died as a result of the gun fire, Nukem was struck in the arm and died several, days later. County detectives Abrahams and James also died as a result of the gunfire. It is not known how long Ptlm. Nukem was an officer or his age. Capt. Otto Fink Died on November 2, 1923 as a result of being shot on Friday August 31, 1923 while responding to a riot in the Rosedale Section of the City. No other information is available on Capt. Fink Sergeant Hojak died on Sunday December 25, 1949 after suffering a fatal heart attack shortly after assisting other public safety personnel at the scene of a fire in the Kernville section of the city. After assisting at the scene, he returned to the public safety building and collapsed. He was taken to Memorial Hospital where he was pronounced dead. Sergeant Hojak was a 12 year veteran and died at the age of 40. He was survived by his wife. Ptlm. Evans Died on Friday December 18, 1959 as he was attempting to stop a speeding vehicle. Ptlm. Evans was near the end of his shift and heading back to the station to sign out and go home. He heard tires screeching loudly and rushed to see the cause of the noise. A car careened around a corner and Evans stepped off the curb and blew his whistle and raised his hand for the car to stop. The car didn't stop and Evans was thrown across the street. Ptlm. Evans was 40 years old and survived by his wife and three sons ![]() Ptlm. Krempasky or "Kremp" as his fellow officers called him, died on Tuesday February 24, 1998. Kremp finished his tour of duty and died of a fatal heart attack as soon as he had gotten home from work. Ptlm. Krempasky was a 28 year veteran from 1970 through February 24, 1998, and was surrived by his wife and two daughters. Ptlm. Krempasky graduated from the Allentown Police Academy and was a member of the Cambria County Drug Task Force. He was also a member of the 28th Military Police Group and was active in many civic organizations. ![]() Visitors |
